From the Field: Voyage to the Mariana Trench
In this explorations now video, Scripps development engineer Kevin Hardy explains how an instrument he created will collect water from one of the deepest places on Earth. Hardy and others traveled to the MarianaTrench in the western Pacific Ocean to send several instruments to the seafloor during a July 2011 cruise.

Mr. Hardy,
Thank you for the wonderful video explanation of your invention to capture deep ocean water.
I’m curious, when the mechanism link releases the anchor and allows the caps/lids to close on the tubes of water, are the weights lost? Or, do you have another line attached to them so they can be retrieved afterwards?
I hope you find success in this project.
EWSA member and very thankful for your research.
Safe voyage,
Jolene
En la prospeccion hidrografica las pesas que sirven de guia hacia las profundidades por lo general se pierden.lo importante es la vuelta a superficie de la llegada del instrumental y con ellos los datos , buena navegacion.
