100 Years of Explorations
Take a trip through time celebrating Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s first one hundred years and the people who made it great. In 1903, William E. Ritter and a group of San Diego residents founded a small marine laboratory that became Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Scripps has played a key role in defining the science of oceanography for more than 100 years. Today, Scripps is guided by its mission to seek, teach, and communicate scientific understanding of the oceans, atmosphere, Earth, and other planets for the benefit of society and the environment.
