Around the Pier: A Legendary Scripps Day

Scripps Friends and Family celebrate in aloha style as the sun sets on another great year at Scripps

Scripps Institution of Oceanography students, scientists, staff, alumni, friends and family spent a full day celebrating all things Scripps at the fifth annual Scripps Day, June 15, 2012. The annual event commemorates achievements of the past year, a commencement for graduating students, recognition of honors received by members of the Scripps community, and open houses across campus.

This year Scripps alumnus Rick Grigg, legendary surfer and emeritus professor of oceanography at University of Hawaii at Manoa, delivered the keynote address to graduating Students. “Keep true to the dreams of your youth,” was his advice to the future science leaders hoping to follow in his footsteps.

  • <p>Marine Vertebrates Collections Manager H.J. Walker teaches Scripps Day guests about the value of preserved fish to the scientific community.</p>
  • <p>The family of Jim Ax held a small ceremony dedicating a seaside deck on the Scripps Campus in his name.</p>

  • <p>UC San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox greets Scripps alumnus and keynote speaker Rick Grigg. This was Fox´s final Scripps Day before she steps down as chancellor in July 2012 after eight years of leadership.</p>
  • <p>With their friends, family, and professors cheering them on, graduating Scripps Master´s and Ph.D. students were recognized at an informal Scripps Day commencement ceremony.</p>
  • <p>The Scripps Seaside Forum buzzed with activity as old friends reconnected and new friends were made.</p>
