Coming in September: The Origins of Slime
Growing up in Italy, Francesca Malfatti was
all too familiar with mucilage, the sticky
whitish-green slime that rises to the surface
on northern Adriatic Sea beaches. Major
mucilage events across three countries in
recent decades have threatened to drive
tourists away, as well as harm the regional
fishing industry. Malfatti, a Scripps
graduate student, and her advisor, Farooq
Azam, are probing the causes of mucilage
outbreaks and in the process discovering more
about how microscopic matter influence the
marine ecosystem.
