National Oceans Month: June 2007
Scripps Celebrates the OceansPresident George W. Bush has officially designated June 2007 as the first-ever National Oceans Month to encourage Americans to protect and to celebrate our oceans for the vital role they play in our country. June 8 is World Ocean Day and also has been declared by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California's "Thank You Ocean" Day. In his May 31 proclamation, Bush stated, "Our nation benefits from the oceans that contain precious natural treasures, carry much of our trade, and provide us with food and recreational opportunities. During National Oceans Month, we celebrate these benefits, and we underscore our commitment to being good stewards of the oceans." Tony Haymet, director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, lauded Bush's declaration. "At Scripps we work every day to promote the health and understanding of our oceans for the benefit of our nation and the world," said Haymet. "We are very pleased to join in celebrating National Oceans Month, and echo President Bush's encouragement of Americans to take action to help protect the future of our valuable oceans and coasts."
